Vriddhachalam is a municipality and a taluk headquarters, and the largest town on this side of the district. It is also a railway junction, and a busy one: the point where the Chennai to Madurai line meets the lines to Salem, Cuddalore and Puducherry.
A junction town runs on other people’s timetables. A great many households here are accustomed to somebody being away, and to the shape of the week being decided somewhere else.
