Bhuvanagiri sits on the Vellar a few kilometres from Chidambaram, and it is a weaving town: Bhuvanagiri pattu, silk and handloom cloth, sent out from here for a very long time. It is also known as the birthplace of the saint Raghavendra Tirtha.
