About Parangipettai
Parangipettai stands at the mouth of the Vellar, on the coast east of Chidambaram. It was Porto Novo once, a port under another flag, and it has been a fishing town far longer than it has been anything else.
Annamalai University’s Centre of Advanced Study in Marine Biology has been here since 1957, so the town holds two quite different populations: families who have fished these waters for generations, and people who came for the research and may not be staying.
