Counselling is not medical detox. If someone drinks heavily every day, stopping suddenly can be dangerous — see a doctor before cutting down.

What people come with

You do not have to call it a problem to come. Wondering is enough.

  • More than you meant

Planning one or two, and it never being one or two.

  • Drinking to cope

Using it to sleep, to relax, or to get through something.

  • Stopping and starting

Trying to stop, managing for a while, and starting again.

  • Hiding it

Keeping it from family, or not wanting to count how much.

  • At home

Arguments, broken promises, and children who see it.

  • Work and money

Missed days, warnings at work, and money that goes on drink.

  • Someone you love drinks

A husband, father or son who drinks, and a family organised around it.

  • Staying stopped

Having stopped, and wanting help to keep it that way.

How sessions run

  1. What it does

What drinking gives you and what it costs, said plainly.

  2. The pattern

When, where and with whom, and what comes just before.

  3. What you want

To cut down or to stop, with a doctor involved if you drink heavily.

  4. The hard moments

A plan for the times and places it is hardest to say no.

Questions people ask

Do I have to stop before I come?

No. You can come while you are still drinking. Whether to cut down or stop is something you decide, with a doctor involved if you drink heavily.

He drinks and will not come. Can I come alone?

Yes. Family members often come on their own first. Sessions can help you understand what is happening and decide what you will and will not accept.

Is this a de-addiction centre?

No. Feathers is a counselling practice, not a residential or medical centre, and it does not provide detox or medication. If medical help is needed, you will be told so and pointed to a doctor.

Will anyone find out?

What is said in a session stays there. The few limits, such as a risk to someone’s safety, are set out on the disclaimer page.

Can the session be in Tamil?

Yes. Sessions run in Tamil or English, whichever you would rather think in.

Alcohol counselling near you

Choose your town. Each page says how to reach the practice from there, and how online sessions work if you would rather not travel.

Somewhere else? Sessions run online, so the same counsellor is as near as your phone.

One message is enough

You do not have to explain everything to book. Say it is about drinking, and whether it is you or someone in your family.

Counselling is not emergency care. In an emergency call 112. The national helpline for alcohol and drugs is 14446, and mental health support is on Tele-MANAS — 14416, both free.
