Emotional Intelligence Game: Feelings Detective

Eight everyday situations, at home, at school and at work. For each one, first work out how the person might be feeling, then choose the most helpful thing to do. Every answer is explained, so you learn as you play. Choose your age group to start: it is a lovely game to play together as a family or a class.

Who is playing?

A game for practice and conversation. It is not a test of emotional intelligence or of anything else, and the score says nothing about who you are.

What is emotional intelligence?

Emotional intelligence is the skill of noticing feelings, in yourself and in others, and responding to them well. Unlike a fixed talent, it can be learnt at any age, and it shapes friendships, marriages, studies and work.

Questions about Feelings Detective

What is a good age to start learning emotional intelligence?

Any age. Children as young as five can learn to name feelings, and adults can change long-held habits of reacting. The game has separate situations for kids, teens and adults.

Is this an emotional intelligence test?

No. It is a game for practice and conversation. It does not measure or label anyone, and a score on one day says nothing about who you are.

Can parents and teachers use it with children?

Yes. Play it together and talk about each situation: “Have you ever felt like that?” The conversation matters more than the score.

Is anything I choose saved?

No details are asked for, and your answers are not sent anywhere. Only your best score is kept, in your own browser.

How can someone get better at handling emotions?

Practice helps: naming feelings, pausing before reacting, and talking things through. If feelings keep getting in the way at home, school or work, a counsellor can help one to one.
