When a friend is heartbroken, it is hard to know what to say. Many people either avoid the subject or give advice that does not land.
This guide is about being useful without saying the wrong thing.
What do you say to a friend after a breakup?
Keep it simple, such as "I'm here for you", then listen without trying to fix it.
Most heartbroken people need to tell the story many times. Let them, without fixing it.
Reflect what you hear: "That sounds really painful." It shows you understand.
Helpful things to say
- "I'm here. Take your time."
- "That sounds really hard."
- "Do you want to talk or just have company?"
What should you not say to someone after a breakup?
Avoid criticising the ex, rushing them to move on, or comparing it to your own breakup.
Criticising the ex can backfire, especially if they get back together. Rushing them to move on can make them feel judged.
Avoid comparing it to your own breakup unless they ask.
Avoid saying
- "You'll find someone better." (too soon)
- "I never liked them anyway."
- "Just forget about it."
How can I practically help a heartbroken friend?
Share meals, check in daily, help with one practical task, and invite them out without pressure.
Offer specific help: bring food, sit with them in the evening, go for a walk, help them stay on top of studies or work.
Invite them out gently, and accept a no without pressure.
Practical support
- Share a meal.
- Check in with a message each day.
- Help with one practical task.
When does a friend need more help after a breakup?
If they talk about ending their life, stop eating or sleeping for days, or drink heavily. Get help immediately.
If your friend talks about not wanting to live, harming themselves, or giving away things, take it seriously. Stay with them and get help.
Encourage them to talk to a counsellor if the sadness lasts for weeks.
Get help now if they
- Talk about ending their life.
- Stop eating or sleeping for days.
- Are using alcohol or drugs heavily.
