Finding out about an affair can feel like the ground has gone. Shock, anger, grief and questions arrive all at once.
This guide is about getting through the first days without making things harder for yourself.
What should I do right after finding out about an affair?
Slow down. Look after sleep and food, tell one trusted person, and avoid big decisions in the first days.
Slow down. Strong feelings are normal and they will not stay this intense. Big decisions made in the first days are often regretted.
Tell one trusted person, not everyone. Protect your sleep and eat, even a little.
What tends to help
- One trusted friend or relative to talk to.
- Keeping children out of adult conversations.
- Writing down your questions rather than asking them all at once.
What should I avoid doing after discovering an affair?
Avoid public scenes, social media posts, contacting the other person, and final decisions while the shock is fresh.
Confronting the other person, posting about it, or telling both families at once usually adds damage without bringing relief.
Checking their phone again and again keeps the wound open. You already know what you need to know for now.
Avoid, for now
- Public scenes or social media posts.
- Contacting the other person.
- Final decisions about the marriage.
How do I talk to my spouse about the affair?
Choose a calm, private time and ask what you need to know: is it over, will they be honest, and what do they want.
Choose a time when children are not around and you are both sober and calm. Ask what you need to know, not every detail.
Notice whether they take responsibility or blame you. That matters for what comes next.
Useful questions
- "Is it over?"
- "Are you willing to be honest from now on?"
- "What do you want for our marriage?"
Can a marriage recover after an affair?
Sometimes, when the affair has ended, your spouse takes responsibility and both of you get help. Leaving can also be the right decision.
Some do, when the affair has ended, the partner takes responsibility, and both are willing to work on what went wrong. It takes time and honesty.
Others do not, and leaving can be the right decision. Either way, you deserve support while you decide.
Signs rebuilding is possible
- The affair has ended completely.
- Your spouse answers questions honestly and without blaming you.
- Both of you are willing to get help.

Questions people ask first
Should I leave immediately after finding out?
Unless you are unsafe, it is usually wiser to wait until the first shock passes before deciding.
Can trust be rebuilt after cheating?
Sometimes, with honesty, an ended affair and time. It is hard work for both.
Should I tell our families?
Tell one trusted person first. Telling everyone at once often makes things harder.
Can I come to counselling alone?
Yes. Many people come alone first to steady themselves and decide.
