"Medical counselling" in Tamil Nadu does not mean talking to a counsellor. It is the official process that allots MBBS and BDS seats after NEET, round by round, based on rank, category and the choices you fill.
This guide explains how it works in general, so the official notices make sense when you read them. It is not the official process, and every year's rules are in that year's prospectus.
What are the two types of medical counselling after NEET?
The All India Quota, run by MCC for 15% of government seats and some national institutions, and the Tamil Nadu state quota, run by the state Selection Committee.
The All India Quota (AIQ) covers 15% of seats in government medical colleges, plus deemed universities and central institutions. It is conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) at mcc.nic.in.
The state quota covers the remaining government seats and the government and management quota seats in self-financing colleges in Tamil Nadu. It is conducted by the Selection Committee under the Directorate of Medical Education, Tamil Nadu, with its notices and applications on tnmedicalselection.net.
Keep apart
- Two registrations, two websites, two sets of dates.
- An AIQ rank and a state merit list are different numbers.
- Check both official sites every few days during the season.
What is the 7.5% reservation for government school students?
A share of state-quota medical seats set apart for students who studied in Tamil Nadu government schools, under the eligibility in the prospectus.
Under a Tamil Nadu law of 2020, 7.5% of state-quota medical seats are set apart for students who studied in government schools in the state. The exact eligibility, including which classes must have been studied in a government school, is set out in the official prospectus.
If this applies to you, keep your school records and certificates ready, and read that section of the prospectus carefully.
If you studied in a government school
- Read the 7.5% eligibility in the prospectus.
- Keep a certificate from your school ready.
- Ask your school's headmaster if anything is unclear.
What are the steps in Tamil Nadu medical counselling?
Register online, upload documents, see the merit list, fill and lock choices, get an allotment, and report to the college, over several rounds.
The usual sequence is: register and apply online, upload documents, pay the fee, see the merit list, fill and lock your choices of college, get a seat allotment, and report to the college by the deadline.
There are several rounds, typically a first round, a second round, a mop-up round and a stray vacancy round. What happens if you take, upgrade or leave a seat differs between rounds, so read those rules before each one.
Usually asked for
- NEET admit card and scorecard.
- 10th and 12th mark sheets, transfer certificate.
- Community and nativity certificates, photographs.
How should I fill choices in medical counselling?
Fill many choices in your true order of preference, check every fee, and decide as a family before the window opens.
Fill more choices than you think you need, in the order you truly prefer. A seat you put high on the list and are allotted may be binding, depending on the round.
Look at last year's closing ranks on the official sites only as a rough guide; they change every year. Decide as a family before the choice-filling window opens, not in the last hour.
Before you lock choices
- List colleges in your real order of preference.
- Note the fee of every self-financing college you add.
- Have one person check the list before you lock it.
How can a career counsellor help after NEET?
With the decisions around the process: which course fits, whether to take a seat or try again, and the stress of waiting.
The process itself is for the official sites and the Selection Committee's help desk. Where a counsellor can help is around it: choosing between MBBS, BDS and other courses, deciding whether to take a seat or try again next year, and the stress of the waiting.
A career guidance session with the student and parents together can make those decisions calmer, in Tamil or English, online or in Neyveli.
Where a career session helps
- MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, nursing or allied health: which fits?
- Taking a seat now or attempting NEET again.
- A student who is anxious, or not sleeping before results.

Where Feathers fits
Feathers offers career guidance after 12th and after NEET for students and their parents: understanding the options, weighing a seat against a second attempt, and handling the pressure. It does not fill applications or predict seats.
This guide is published by Feathers Life Coach, a counselling and career guidance practice in Neyveli. It is not connected with MCC, the Directorate of Medical Education or any admission body.
