Tharangambadi, once known as Tranquebar, is a coastal town in Mayiladuthurai district, where the Danish built Fort Dansborg in 1620 and where one of the first Tamil printing presses was set up.
Today it is a small town of fishing families, schools and old streets by the sea. Work at sea and work abroad keep families apart, and that distance is its own strain.
