As the wedding gets closer, many people lie awake wondering if they are doing the right thing. Most of the time it is the size of the change talking.
Sometimes it is not. This guide helps you tell the difference.
Is it normal to have doubts before marriage?
Yes. Most people feel unsure as the date approaches. Normal nerves are about the change and the day itself, and they come and go.
Yes. Leaving home, a new family, a new routine and the pressure of the day itself are huge. Feeling unsettled is a reasonable response.
Normal nerves come and go, ease when you spend time with your partner, and are about what will change rather than about who they are.
Usually just nerves
- Worry about the wedding arrangements or moving home.
- Fear of change, even when you like your partner.
- Doubts that fade after a good conversation together.
How do I know if my doubts before the wedding are serious?
Take it seriously when the doubt is about how they treat you: anger you fear, control, lies, or not respecting your views.
Pay attention when the doubt is about how they treat you: anger you are afraid of, control over your phone or friends, lies about money or the past, or no interest in your opinions.
Also notice if you feel relief, not sadness, at the thought of the wedding being cancelled.
Do not ignore
- Feeling afraid of their reaction.
- Being pressured to say yes quickly or cut off friends.
- Important things hidden from you.
How can I find out more about my partner before deciding?
Raise one honest concern calmly and watch the response. Listening is a good sign; dismissing you or getting angry is not.
Raise one honest concern with your partner, calmly. How they respond tells you a great deal: do they listen, get defensive, or dismiss you?
Someone who can hear a worry now is someone you can solve problems with later.
Watch for
- Do they ask questions, or change the subject?
- Do they take it seriously, or laugh it off?
- Do they follow up later, without being asked?
Can I postpone or cancel my wedding?
Yes. It is hard, but far easier than undoing a marriage. Talk to someone neutral and one trusted family member first.
Postponing is hard, expensive and embarrassing. A marriage that should not have happened is harder, for everyone, for much longer.
If you are seriously unsure, talk to someone neutral before the date, and to one trusted person in your family.
Next steps
- Write down exactly what worries you.
