In an arranged marriage you may have only two or three meetings before a decision. Small talk fills them easily, and the important questions are left for later.

Here are the questions that tell you the most, grouped by topic.

What should I ask about daily life before an arranged marriage?

Ask where you will live, what weekends usually look like, and how household work will be shared.

Ask what a normal weekday and weekend look like for them, and what they expect after marriage. Where will you live? Who does which household tasks?

These sound small, but they are where most early arguments start.

Ask

  • "Where do you see us living in the first year?"
  • "How do you usually spend your weekends?"
  • "How do you think household work should be shared?"

Is it okay to ask about money before an arranged marriage?

Yes, politely. Ask about loans, savings and family responsibilities, and share your own situation first.

Yes, politely. Loans, savings and responsibility for parents affect your future directly. Asking is not greed; it is planning.

Share your own situation first. It makes the question feel fair.

Ask

  • "Do you have any loans or family financial responsibilities?"
  • "How do you think we should manage money as a couple?"
  • "Do you expect me to keep working after marriage?"

What should I ask about their family before marriage?

Ask how decisions are made, how involved their parents will be, and what they would do if the two families disagree.

Ask how decisions are made in their family, and how involved they expect parents to be in your life together.

Listen for whether they can say what they want, or only what their family wants.

Ask

  • "How often do you expect to visit or live with your parents?"
  • "If our families disagree, how would you handle it?"
  • "Who makes big decisions in your family?"

What are the most important questions to ask before marriage?

Ask about children and timing, both careers, and what they do when they are angry or hurt.

Ask about children and timing, about each other's careers, and about how they behave when upset. These are the decisions that shape the next twenty years.

A good sign is someone who asks you the same questions back.

Ask

  • "When and how many children would you like?"
  • "What do you do when you are angry or hurt?"
  • "What did you learn from your parents' marriage?"

Questions people ask first

Is it rude to ask personal questions before marriage?

Not if you ask respectfully and share your own answers too.

How many meetings should we have before deciding?

Enough to talk about money, family and children honestly. For many people that is more than one.

What if they avoid serious questions?

That is useful information. Gently ask again, and notice whether it changes.

Can we talk to a counsellor together before deciding?

Yes. A session can help you both ask and answer honestly.

If this is your house

One conversation is enough to find out whether it helps. Sessions run in Tamil or English, in person in Neyveli or online from anywhere.
