Revision can feel endless: the same notes, the same pages, and the mind drifting away. Then, close to exams, boredom turns into worry.
This guide covers both: how to make studying less boring, and how to keep exam stress at a level that helps.
What is the best way to avoid boredom while studying?
Change the method: test yourself, explain topics aloud and switch subjects instead of rereading notes.
Rereading notes is the most boring way to study, and one of the least effective. The mind switches off because it is not being asked to do anything.
Boredom is a signal to change the method, not to stop. Switch to doing: answer questions, explain the topic aloud, draw it as a diagram.
Ways to make revision active
- Test yourself with past papers or flashcards.
- Teach the topic to a friend or to an empty room.
- Switch subjects every block or two.
How do I stay motivated during long revision?
Set three small, clear goals a day and tick each one off.
A day that is just "study" feels shapeless. Small, clear goals give a sense of progress that keeps you going.
Tick each one off. Seeing a list of done tasks is a reward in itself.
Small goals that work
- "Finish 20 problems" instead of "study maths".
- Three goals for the day, not ten.
- A small reward after each one.
How can students overcome stress during exams?
Breathe slowly, plan each day until the exam, practise timed papers, and keep sleeping at your usual time.
A little tension before exams sharpens focus. Too much shows up as poor sleep, a racing mind, headaches, or blanking out in the exam hall.
Slow breathing, a plan for each day until the exam, and practising under timed conditions all bring it down.
When stress is rising
- Breathe in for four counts, out for six, for two minutes.
- Write tomorrow's plan before bed, then stop.
- Do one timed practice paper each week.
When should a student get help for exam stress?
If it stops you sleeping, eating or studying for a couple of weeks, or you feel hopeless, talk to someone.
If stress stops you from sleeping, eating or studying for more than a couple of weeks, or you feel hopeless, it is time to talk to someone.
A parent, teacher or counsellor can help you make a plan and carry some of the weight.
Signs to talk to someone
- Many nights without proper sleep.
- Feeling like nothing will help.
- Avoiding books, college or friends completely.

Revise lightly, prepare your things, breathe slowly and sleep at your usual time.
Is exam stress normal?
Some is normal and helpful. It needs help when it stops you sleeping or studying.
Can students talk to a counsellor online?
Yes, by video or voice call, with or without a parent.
