Arguments

Why does my husband turn every argument around?

For the wife who raises one small thing and somehow ends up being the one who apologises.

You say "you forgot again", and within a minute it is about your tone, your family or something you did last year. You end up defending yourself.

This guide explains why this happens in so many marriages, and what you can change in how the talk starts.

Why does my husband always think I'm attacking him?

Many men hear a complaint as a judgement of who they are, so they defend themselves by attacking back.

Many men grow up hearing criticism as a judgement of who they are. So a complaint about one thing feels like "you are a bad husband", and the reply is a counter-attack.

Some also learnt that the person who admits fault loses. Turning it around protects them from feeling that.

What is often underneath

  • Feeling criticised or not good enough.
  • Stress from work, money or family.
  • Never having seen calm disagreement at home.

How do I raise a problem without him turning it around?

Start with how you feel, not with what he did, keep to one topic, and ask for one specific thing.

The first sentence decides most arguments. "You never help" invites a defence. "I feel tired and alone with the housework, can we plan it together?" is harder to turn around.

Start with how you feel, not with what he did. Then ask for one specific thing.

Words that lower the defence

  • "I feel..." instead of "You always...".
  • One topic only, not a list.
  • A clear, small request.

When is the best time to talk about a problem with my husband?

At an agreed calm time, not when either of you is tired, hungry, angry or in front of family.

Raising a problem when he has just come home, in front of family, or late at night almost guarantees a fight.

Agree a calmer time for difficult talks. If it starts to turn around, name it gently: "We have moved to a different topic. Can we finish this one first?"

Timing that helps

  • Not when either of you is hungry, tired or angry.
  • Not in front of children or relatives.
  • Agree to pause and come back within a day.

When is it more than just arguing?

When he always blames you, belittles you, controls you or frightens you. That is control, and your safety matters first.

Every couple argues. But if he always makes you the problem, mocks you, controls who you speak to or frightens you, that is a pattern of control, not a misunderstanding.

In that case, talking more nicely will not fix it. Talk to someone you trust, and look after your safety.

Signs it is more than arguing

  • You feel afraid to raise anything at all.
  • He belittles you in front of others.
  • Disagreements end with threats or force.

Questions people ask first

Why does my husband think I am attacking him?

Usually because he hears a complaint as a judgement of him. Starting with your feelings helps.

Should I stop raising problems to keep the peace?

No. Unspoken problems grow. Change how and when you raise them instead.

What if he refuses to talk about it at all?

Counselling can still help you alone, and often shifts the pattern at home.

Can we do couples counselling online?

Yes, by video or voice call, together or separately.
