A match abroad can be a wonderful opportunity. It can also hide things that would be obvious if the person lived in the next town.
This guide lists what to check and discuss, so the decision rests on facts and not only on photographs and promises.
What should I verify before marrying someone working abroad?
The employer and job independently, the visa type and whether a spouse can join, and any previous marriage, asked plainly.
Ask for the basics in writing: employer name, job title, visa or residence status, and whether a spouse visa is possible. Look up the employer yourself rather than relying on documents alone.
Ask directly about previous marriages or engagements. It is a fair question and the answer, and how it is given, tells you a lot.

What should we discuss about the first year of an NRI marriage?
How long you will live apart, where each of you will stay, and whether the moving spouse will be allowed to work abroad.
Many couples spend the first year apart while papers are processed. Ask how long, who will pay for travel, and where the bride or groom will live in the meantime: with in-laws, with parents, or alone.
Discuss work too. Will the spouse who moves be allowed to work there? Many visas do not allow it, which changes daily life a great deal.

- Where each of you stays meanwhile.
- Whether the moving spouse can work abroad.
What are the warning signs in an NRI marriage proposal?
A rushed wedding with vague answers, avoided video calls, inconsistent work stories, and plans for someone else to hold your documents.
Pressure to finish the wedding within weeks, reluctance to video call, inconsistent stories about work, or large demands from the family are reasons to slow down.
So is a plan where your passport, money or documents would be held by someone else. You should always keep your own documents.

How can we get to know each other before an NRI marriage?
Have several long video calls without family present, about daily life abroad, loneliness, visits home and how you would handle fights.
